The castles in Santorini have very rich historical importance in the lives of the people that inhabited the island in the times of their construction. Because many of the castles were purposely built for protective needs, their structure and design reflected the architecture of the security concerns of the time. And this is seeing in the very narrow pathways, labyrinths and mostly one entrance into many of the castles.

Castle of Agios Nikolaos in Oia

The castle of Agios Nikolaos is the best place to watch the sunset in Santorini. In spite of the fact that only the remains of the castle is left today, it remains one of the most popular places for people who are interested in watching or recording the sunset over Greece.

There is an amazing experience in seating at this castle to watch the sun set. From the beauty of the sky to the camaraderie of tourist around you, it’s a fantastic experience.

Castles of Pyrgos and Emporio

Pyrgos is one of the villages on the island of Santorini and its where the castle of Pyrgos is located. Just like many other castles built in ancient times, Pyrgos castle was built on an elevated position to give a good view of the surrounding areas. This Castle dates back to the 10th century

 

Castle and Tower of Emporio

Very close to Prygos is a village called Emporio or Nimporio. There is also a castle in Emporio. These castles are known for their big towers which served as the people’s ultimate shelter during attacks in the ancient times.

     

 

Skaros

The rock of Skaros has been said to represent the remains of a village greatly damaged by the earthquakes that wrecked havoc in Santorini from 16th to 18th Century.

 

Castle of Akrotiri

La Ponta, another name for the castle of Akrotiri is another castle in Santorini. This castle is located in the southern part of the island and has history of occupation by the Ottomans after it changed hands from the Duke of Akrotiri to the Gozzadini family from Italy.

Santorini is home to many museums which houses objects and historical materials demonstrating the very rich historical heritage of the island. Some of these museums are:

Lost Atlantis

The Lost Atlantis houses and promotes Greek heritage, mythology and culture. Located near the village of Megalohori, Lost Atlantis museum was established to exhibit the ancient mythology of a lost city called Atlantis.

Museum of Pre Historic Thera

This museum is house artifacts from to the ancient Thera. Thera has been said to be the name of the mythical ruler of the island. The museum of the pre historic Thera contains a very large quantity of objects from excavations around the southwest part of the island mainly Akrotiri.

Museum of pre historic Thera is located in Fira on the site of the old Ypapanti church that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1956.

Koutsoyannopoulos Wine Museum

One activity that makes Koutsoyannopoulos Wine Museum a must visit place in Santorini is the opportunity such visit provides any visitor to taste 4 different wines.

The museum showcases the history of wine production on the island.

Getting into Santorini by Ferry

Getting to Santorini by Ferry is mainly from Athens. While flights from Athens to Santorini takes about 45 minutes, the journey by Ferry is usually between 4hrs 30 minutes to 7hrs 30mins depending on the itineraries of the Ferry.

Ferry journey allows visitors to explore the islands of Greece and it is reasonable cheaper than flight. An early bird ticket can be as low as €30.
